Make a paracord bag | DIY guide | PART 1 of 2

Make a paracord bag | DIY guide | PART 1 of 2

Create a paracord bag. The same amount of paracord strings can create either a small and tightly braided bag or a tall and wide one with larger spaces between the mesh.

Create a simple paracord bag for your water bottle on vacation. Or use it as a beer bottle holder at a summer festival? The bag can be made entirely of the durable paracord string. Paracord is also used as parachute cord in everyday life, that's how strong it is. Don't you think it can also hold your bottle when you're out and want to have it close at hand? We think it's a smart solution so you don't have to carry a hot bag to have your hands free. The paracord bag is built around the friendship knot. Once you have learned the knot, it is quick to make the bag as the same knot is used over and over again throughout the design. In this guide, we have opted for the large, tall variant that you can see in the picture.

Short video that can give you a taste of how easy it is to make a paracord bag

You can get a taste of how to make the paracord bag with this quick video walkthrough. Further down the page, we also have a full-length video guide on how to make the paracord bag.

Techniques and skills:

  • Design a paracord bag in your own size
  • Learn how to make a bowline knot
  • Learn how to make a friendship knot

Materials you will need:

  • At least 16 meters of paracord type III
  • 2x D-rings (about 2 cm)
  • O-ring or keyring
  • 2x carabiner hooks
  • Optional cord lock
  • Optional 2x end stops

Tools you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  • Tape measure
  • Optional paracord needle

Learn how to braid the paracord bag using the video guide

If you learn best new techniques through video, we have created a video guide for the paracord bag. If you prefer to see the guide with images, you can jump further down the page where you will find the image guide with the 26 steps.

Part 1 out of 2 (Steps 1-12) - Here's how:

Step 1 Cut 8 strings at 1.8 meters

Step 1

Cut 8 strings in a length of 1.8 meters each.
Step 2 Melt the ends with a lighter

Step 2

Melt the ends of all the strings with a lighter so that both the white inner strings and the outer sheath of the paracord string fuse together. This is to ensure that the inner and outer parts of the paracord string remain the same length while braiding.
Step 3 Attach O-ring

Step 3

Fold the 8 strings in half and attach them to the O-ring using a bowline knot so that the ends are the same length.
Step 4 All 8 bowlines should face the same direction

Step 4

Make sure all 8 bowlines face the same direction.
Step 5 Create a net with the strings

Step 5

Now take one end from 2 bowlines, i.e. two different strings sitting next to each other. It is the right end and left end of the two strings that you will tie together, creating a net of strings crisscrossing each other.
Step 6 Make a friendship knot

Step 6

For this guide, the friendship knot is used. It depicts 4 hands holding on to each other in a square and provides a neat checkered pattern.

NOTE: Be consistent with the way you braid for all knots on the bag so that it is consistent in the pattern.

Note the distance between each friendship knot.
The smaller the distance, the tighter and narrower the bag will be.
The larger the distance, the fewer rows of knots you need to braid and the larger and wider the bag will be.
Step 7 This is how you make the friendship knot

Step 7

Start by folding the right string like a Ͷ. Then bring the left string through it to create an S shape between the two strings. It goes through from below the left corner so that it forms: under, over, over -(fold)- under, over, under -(fold)- over, over, under.
Step 8 Keep the same distance

Step 8

Afterwards, you can tighten the two ends until the knot is tight. Adjust so that you get the desired distance from the previous row of knots. Keep this distance all the way for a smooth shape on the bag.
Step 9 Make knots around the entire bag

Step 9

Continue braiding where you use the left and right end of the 2 friendship knots next to each other.
Step 10 Braid 12 rows

Step 10

Braid about 12 rows or until you have at least 15 cm left in each end.
Step 11 Make the top edge

Step 11

Cut a piece of paracord to be used as the top edge of the bag and that can be tied. The length depends on how wide your bag has become. You can always cut it shorter - preferably start by cutting it too long. Remember to have 10-20 cm extra in each end so that there is some string to hold onto when the bag is fully open. For this bag, it was cut to 100 cm. Melt the ends.
Step 12 Cut all the ends

Step 12

Cut all the ends from the bag the same length, as they may have shifted along the way. They should be at least 8 cm long - preferably up to 15 cm. The shorter, the closer the string will be to the friendship knot.
