Homemade dice cup in leather including combined lid and dice tray | DIY guide

Make your own leather dice cup/lid for your board game

This DIY guide shows you how to make your own personalized leather dice cup with lid. The lid can also be used as a dice tray. The guide can be followed by children in grades 6-8 or can be just as interesting for adults. This project is a fun and exciting way for children to develop their craftsmanship skills by creating a personal gaming gadget. The dice cup can be used for board games or as a unique storage solution for dice with the many different edges often used in strategy and role-playing games. But the dice cup can also be used for gift exchanges during Christmas, for Yatzy, or many other dice games.

The project is suitable for children aged 12-15 and designed to be easy to understand and follow, as each step is shown with a picture, explaining how to cut the leather, treat the leather, mark the holes with the correct leather tools, and how to sew it all together to create a finished dice cup with a lid/dice tray.

By making their own leather dice cup with a lid, children will have a unique gadget that they can use for board games and other fun activities. This will give them a sense of pride and satisfaction as they have created something with their own hands. And you will also think that it's cool if you make the dice cup yourself.

So let's get started with this fun and creative DIY guide, where you or your children will learn how to sew your own leather dice cup with lid and create a personal gaming gadget that you can play with for hours in your spare time!

Techniques and Skills:

  • Working with leather
  • Sewing in leather
  • Working with the cone stub shape
  • Using leather hardener
  • Using an edge creaser
  • Optional edge polisher

Materials you will need to make a dice cup:

  • Leather 2.5 mm
  • Waxed linen thread, white 0.9 mm
  • Leather hardener
  • Painter's tape

Tools to use:

  • Hobby knife / leather scissors
  • Grease pen
  • Awl
  • Cork block / cork pad
  • 2 needles
  • Edge creaser
  • Wool brush
  • Edge polisher
  • Optional cutting mat when using a hobby knife
  • Disposable gloves

How to do it:

Step 1 Trace the pattern from the template onto the leather

Step 1

Print out the template and place it on the leather. You can secure it with some painter's tape.

Trace around it.

Mark the holes with the awl.
Step 2 Cut out the leather with a hobby knife

Step 2

Cut out the leather with a hobby knife.
Step 3 Apply leather hardener with wool brush

Step 3

Apply leather hardener with a wool brush to the back of the leather on the large part of the dice cup and the two parts for the bottom.

Allow it to dry.
Step 4 Make holes with awl

Step 4

Make the holes with the awl on the cork pad.
Step 5 Use edge creaser on leather edge

Step 5

Use the edge creaser on all the leather edges of the pattern pieces.
Step 6 Use edge polisher on leather edges

Step 6

Use the edge polisher on all edges until they are smooth and polished.
Step 7 Sew the pieces together

Step 7

Now the pieces need to be sewn together.

Cut a piece of thread that is about 8 times longer than what you need to sew with.

Place a needle in each end of the thread.

Sew the bottom together with the short/bottom part of the cup.
Step 8 Knot if the thread is too short or continue to sew leather pieces together

Step 8

You can knot the thread when you have finished sewing the two pieces together.

But if you have enough thread, you can also continue to sew the rest along the edge.
Step 9 Sew the sides of the dice cup together

Step 9

Continue to sew the sides of the cup together.
Step 8 Sew the lid together with the dice cup

Step 10

Now you need to sew the lid to the dice cup.

Sew the long piece together with the bottom (circle) and continue to sew the 4 holes to close it off.

Just like you did with the dice cup.

Also see the next picture to see the backside of the 4 holes.
Step 11 Sew the backside of the lid

Step 11

The stitching on the back of the lid should resemble small crosses.
Step 12 Finished homemade leather dice cup

Step 12

Now the leather dice cup, and the lid, which can be used for rolling the dice into, is finished. It will dampen the sound of the dice roll.

We hope you enjoy your new DIY project.
