Hamon Clay - Satanite 0,5 kg

Hamon Clay - Satanite 0,5 kg
Selective hardening lines, or hamons as they are called in Japanese, are differences in the appearance of the steel on a knife blade (or traditional Katana sword in Japan) as a result of selective heat treatment/hardening.
The difference in appearance shows itself in varying contrasts on the steel.

In the hardening process, the uninsulated part of the blade will be cooled quickly, while the insulated part will take longer.
In addition to the undeniable aesthetic quality, the creation of true hamons or selective hardening lines makes it possible to obtain an extremely hard edge while keeping the rest of the blade flexible.

The Hamon clay only works on non-rusting carbon steel such as 1075, 1095, O2 and others.

The Hamon clay is mixed with water in another container, and applied in a uniform layer over the parts of the blade that must be insulated during curing. You can e.g. play around with making the line wavy or something. First, the clay is applied to one side - and when it has dried up, the clay is applied to the other side. Remember to also apply the clay to the back of the blade.

The blade is then hardened as usual.

After curing, the curing lines or Hamon may become visible. can be done in several ways. The easiest is as follows.
The blade is dipped in Iron Coloride for approx. 45 sec. This is done 10 times. Between each dip, polish the knife blade with steel wool 000 or sandpaper P2000 or finer. After the 10 dips, the blade is cleaned in soapy water to neutralize the ferric chloride
